Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy

Algoma, Wisconsin

Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy is family dairy farm, founded in 1963. Production of milk has started at this farm since the very beginning. In 1995 at the place of old barn a new free-stall barn for 270 cows and milking parlor 2×8. In 2002 was built. In 2002 they completed setting up of milking parlor 2×12. 500 cows are milking three times per day, with the daily performance — 40 kg/cow.

For a long time, heifers for Heim's Hillcrest Dairy were grown by contractor farmer. Now three years is succession Heim’s Hillcrest Dairy do this alone. The pan for growing calves is placed next to the barn. For two years calves of pre-weaning period are fed by automatic feeding system with pasteurized milk.

Just after calving calves are kept in 14 individual huts. After that, when group is formed of 14 calves (youngest calf can be at the age of 5 days) they are grouped together and fed with automatic system. The age gap in group is about 15 days, depending on the intensity of calving.

In group of 14 claves they are kept for 2 months. When the last calf is taking off the automatic feeding, all of them are carried to another area (the oldest one can be 75 days old and the youngest — 60 days). The pen is cleaned, disinfected, then new group of calves is transferred to it.

Heifers are kept at a separate pen from the age of two-month and till the 255th day of pregnancy. Then heifers are back to the farm.

Farmers are convinced that animals grown on automated feeding system have higher milk performance during the first lactation. Terms of puberty and insemination of heifers is shortened to 1−1,5 months due to better health and weight gain. Before it, they have been using hormonal drugs for 12 month-old unfertilized animals to stimulate ovulation. Now they sharply reduced the use of hormones. Heifers show better signs of heat and are better exposed to insemination.
