To be or not to be — special requirements for the marking and selling of milk-containing products

The Association of milk producers (AMP) supports the decision of the trial chamber of the European Union in Luxembourg that the manufacturers of products of plant origin have no right to give such products the «milk» names.

This was reported by the Vice-President of AMP Anna Lavrenyuk.

«At the initiative of AMP and GS «Ukrainian Agrarian Council» there was developed the draft law «On amendments to the Law of Ukraine «On milk and dairy products» (with respect to milk-containing products)» (reg.№ 3043−1 from 23.09.2015), which is supposed to introduce the concept of «milk-containing product», to set special requirements for the marking and selling of milk-containing products, and to provide responsibility for violation of these requirements», — said Vice-President of AMP.

Anna Lavrenyuk stressed that under this bill, it is prohibited to use fats and proteins of non-milk origin in the production of the dairy products, and in the production of traditional dairy products — to use some stabilizers and preservatives.

«In the production of milk-containing products it is prohibited the addition of raw materials of non-milk origin, which replace milk fat more than 50 percent in the fat phase of the product», — said Anna Lavrenyuk.

According to her, marking and the location of dairy and milk-containing products on the store shelves are of particular importance of the bill.

So, according to the requirements of the proposed bill, dairy products should be exposed on the shelves and sections of the counter separately from milk-containing products which must be labeled with the following text: «Milk-containing product. Contains fat of non-milk origin».
